POSITION SUMMARY:

To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by: Supervising all technicians as they provide optimal services, including delivering medications to patient care areas, while complying with the laws governing the practice of pharmacy. The pharmacy technician coordinator supports the Director of Pharmacy in ensuring that the pharmacy provides optimal services; meets all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements, and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards of Health First, Inc. Develops and meets departmental goals that align with facility and organization goals. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Engagement:
  • Work diligently to increasingly engage, provide tools of engagement, and raise issues of engagement with direct reports.
Quality/No Harm:
  • Ensures maintenance of an adequate medication supply. Ensures the integrity of the medication supply.
  • Ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients. Assures adequate control, procurement of and documentation of controlled substances.Ensures pharmacy technician certification and/or registration is maintained in department files.
  • Ensures compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations.
  • Supervises medication storage and preparation areas by pharmacy technicians throughout the facility.
  • Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required data.
  • Assists Director with the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization. Attends pharmacy staff meetings and reads pertinent email communication. Participates in orientation, education, and training programs.
  • Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements. Maintains patient and department/hospital confidentiality.
  • Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required. Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations. Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned.
  • Supervises and participates, when appropriate, in the quality improvement and workflow activities of the pharmacy. Establish a schedule for all pharmacy techs; arrange for schedule switches and PL, monitors workload statistics. Rearrange staff in the day to make sure all areas are covered (IV, OR, FR, Pyxis, etc).
  • Arranges for "as needed" schedules including for support staff for Buyer/warehouse and in the event of special projects, hurricanes, holidays and disasters. Manages schedule in the event of "call-offs" and unforeseen schedule change
    •Reviews staff productivity, medication fill accuracy and engagement with Pharmacy Director and/or Lead Pharmacist Team Identifies strengths and opportunities for growth.
Customer Experience:
  • Supervises all pharmacy technician personnel. Recruits, interviews, promote, disciplines, and terminate pharmacy technician staff with Pharmacy Director approval.
  • Assists in the development of pharmacy technician job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels pharmacy technician staff on their performance.
  • Supervises and participates in the development and presentation of orientation, education, and training programs to the administrative team, pharmacy, medical, nursing, and other staffs as needed.
  • Performs all activities of a Technician III if needed.
  • Supports pharmacy representation in committee/functions required by the organization including the Pharmacy/Nursing Committee
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication and delivers professional presentations as needed.
  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Maintains patient and Department/Hospital confidentiality.
Stewardship:
  • Assists Director with preparation of pharmacy budget annually.
    •Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
  • Assists Director with justification of all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
  • Reviews and approves work schedules and monitors workload statistics of pharmacy technician staff.
  • Support and assist in the preparation of financial reports for administration in accordance with policy
  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.

Work Experience

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Current pharmacy technician certification by PTCB or ExCPT.
    •Pharmacy Technician Registration for the State of Florida.
  • Associate degree preferred; minimum 1-year college-level courses required.
  • Computer skills to support distribution systems required
  • Minimum of 40 hours per week, but hours may be long and irregular; includes evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers. Good hand and wrist dexterity to enable typing and/or computer work for 8-10 hours/day.
  • Good eyesight to read labels/prescriptions, graduated containers of fluids, to count tabs, capsules.
  • Good hearing to understand phone instructions/orders, customers and those in which the position depends.
  • Ability to work in noisy distracting atmosphere, to handle frequent interruptions, to adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Handle large volumes of work for long periods of time.
  • Walk, bend, stoop, twist, sit, and stand for long periods of time, 8-10 hours a day.
    •May require lifting and carrying light loads (Up to 40 lbs.)
